If you are not aware, “fronting” is typically where a parent takes out car insurance in their name as the main driver but for a car that is mainly being driven by a young son or daughter who would be stated on the policy as an additional driver. The reason this is done is to lower the cost of the cover as it is generally a lot more expensive to insure a young motorist than a mature, experienced driver. However, you should know that this is actually illegal and has serious implications if found out.
You may find it of interest to read that the price comparison website Go.Compare had some research carried out between 5th to 12th August 2022 of a total of 1,001 parents in the UK of children between the ages of 17 to 25. This research revealed that 20% i.e. 1 in 5 of those parents were “fronting”. We are sure that you will agree that is an extremely high figure and is most worrying.
Fronting is actually considered to be insurance fraud that could lead to being convicted in a criminal court, getting points on your license and being fined. The policy would no doubt be cancelled by the insurance company and getting car insurance in the future is likely to be much more expensive. If you had tried to claim on the policy as a result of say a road traffic accident and it was discovered by the insurer that the policy involved fronting then the insurance company would not pay out.
On a positive note, the above figures are better than last year when 24% of such policyholders involved fronting.
Whilst some parents may genuinely have not realised that fronting was illegal there will no doubt have been others who did know they were committing motor insurance fraud.
So, please make sure that you do not get involved in fronting as it is just not worth taking the risk.
