You may find it of interest to read that the sale of new cars here in the UK hit a record for the month of February according to data published by the Society Of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Apparently, more new cars were registered in February 2024 than in the same month since 2004 – that is a twenty-year record.
It is also worth noting that February 2024 is the nineteenth month in a row that growth in the new car sales market has been seen. This will come as good news for those involved in the motor trade industry that did, like a lot of businesses, suffer tremendously during the pandemic.
February 2024 saw new car registrations amounting to 84,886 whereas in February 2023 new car sales totaled 74,441. That is a significant rise of 14.0%.
On a year to date basis to February 2024 new car registrations amounted to 227,762 compared to 206,435 in February 2023. That is a rise of 10.3%.
In February 2024 the sale of new diesel fuelled cars amounted to 4,995 compared to 5,397 in the same month last year – a drop of 7.4%. The market share for new diesel cars in February 2024 fell to 5.9% compared to 7.3% in February 2023. The market share for new petrol fuelled cars in February of this year amounted to 48,001 compared to 42,378 in February 2023 – a rise of 13.3%. The sale of electric cars also saw a big rise in February 2024 compared to February 2023.
Interestingly, the sale of new cars for the private sector dropped from 29,391 in February 2023 to 28,630 in February 2024 – a fall of 2.6%. Fleet new car sales rose by 25.2% and business car sales increased by 15.5% when comparing the same periods.
