The motor trade industry went through very difficult times here in the UK during the pandemic and also during the recession. Therefore it is pleasing to read that the number of new cars sold rose in November 2023 according to data published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
In November 2023, the number of new cars registered amounted to 156,525. In November 2022, the number of new cars sold in the UK amounted to 142,889. That is an increase of 9.5%.
The sale of new diesel cars fell from 5,605 in November 2022 to 4,663 in November 2023 with this being a reduction of 16.8%. The number of new petrol cars rose from 57,590 in November 2022 to 61,875 in November 2023 – a rise of 7.4%.
On a year to date basis to November 2022, the number of new cars sold in the UK totalled 1,485,601. On a year to date basis to November 2023, the number of new cars sold in the UK amounted to 1,761,962 – that is a huge rise of 18.6%.
The number of new cars sold for the private sector on a year to date basis to November 2023 amounted to 773,807 compared to 766,096 for the same period in 2022 – a rise of 1.0%. New fleet car sales for the year to date to November 2023 amounted to 947,422 compared to 681,137 for the same period to last year – a huge increase of 39.1%. New car sales for the business sector amounted to 40,733 for the year to date basis to November 2023 compared to 38,368 for the same period in 2022 – a rise of 6.2%.
