You may be interested to read that according to figures published by the Society Of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) there are now over 1 million Evs on roads here in the UK. Who would have thought that only a few years ago we would now be able to say that. It will be very interesting just to see how that figure continues to grow in the next few years not only here in the UK but also in other countries around the world.
It is also very interesting to hear that the number of cars on our road system here in the UK in 2022 amounted to 35, 148,045. Taking into account other vehicles i.e. trucks, buses and vans the total number of vehicles on UK roads amounted to 40,723,974 in 2022.
Another interesting statistic is the impact the introduction of EVs is having on our environment. Although there are more vehicles on our roads, CO2 emissions from cars and vans have reduced by an average of 1.6%. The number of EVs has gone up by in excess of 50% in the space of 12 months. That would appear to be a very good achievement.
The number of people who have an electric powered commercial vehicle has also gone up. Such van ownership has risen by over 67% and coaches and buses by almost 35%.
However, a disappointing statistic is the number of public EV charging points available to motorists here in the UK. In 2021 there was 1 public standard charger for every 31 plug in cars yet in 2022 that figure had dropped to 1 public standard charger for every 36 plug in cars. It would appear that more needs to be done in this respect here in the UK.
You may find it of interest to read that only 1 car that is currently on our roads is automatic transmission. It is rather disappointing that a mere 15% of cars on UK roads were manufactured in the UK. Having said that, over 42% of buses and 28% of trucks were built here in the UK.
In 2022, there were 11,620,116 super minis on UK roads, 9,214,039 lower medium cars and 5,259,704 dual-purpose cars. The smallest segment was luxury saloons with only 194,856. Just under 30% of cars were in excess of 12 years old with cars of less than 3 years old totaling almost 14%.
