It is pleasing to read that the number of new cars sold in the UK in the first month of 2023 rose when compared with January 2022. This is the 6th month in a row that we have seen such sales rise. This news will please those people involved in the motor trade industry.
In January 2023 the number of new cars registered in the UK amounted to 131,994 whereas for the same month last year the figure was 115,087 according to data published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) That is a significant rise of 14.7%.
It was pleasing to see that the sale of new battery/ electric cars has gone up. This news will please many people including the government. The sale of petrol cars rose whereas the sale of diesel cars fell.
The sale of new cars privately reduced in January 2023 whereas the sale of new cars for the fleet and business sectors increased.

Whilst writing, the SMMT has published figures relating to the sale of used cars in the UK in 2022. The number of second hand cars sold amounted to 6,890,777 compared with 7,530,956 in 2021.
