You may be aware that, like many industries, the motor trade industry has been going through some difficult trading times here in the UK so it is pleasing to hear that new car production rose for the second month in a row in November 2022. In fact, car production has grown in 6 out of the last 7 months.
Last month saw 80,091 new cars built in the UK compared to 75,756 in November 2021 according to figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). This was an increase of 5.7%. 20,206 of last month’s cars were built for the home market compared to 12,701 in November last year. 59,885 were built for the export market last month compared to 63,055 in November 2021.
It is interesting to read that over a third of new vehicles constructed in November 2022 were electric/battery type ones. 29,318 of such vehicles were produced.
However, on a year to date basis to November 2022, 723,846 new cars were built whereas for the same period last year the figure was 797,265. That is a significant drop of 9.2%.
Another pleasing statistic for November 2022 was that the number of new cars registered here in the UK increased significantly when compared to November last year. There were 142,889 new cars registered last month compared to 115,706 in November 2021 – a rise of 23.5%.
However, on a year to date basis to November 2022, 1,485,601 new cars were sold compared to 1,538,585 for the same period last year – a drop of 3.4%.
The top 3 selling new cars on a year to date basis to November 2022 were the Nissan Qashqai 39,198, Vauxhall Corsa 34,663 and the Ford Puma 33,306.
Perhaps the future may be a little brighter for the new car market here in the UK although things like the financial situation here in the UK could put a dampener on things. We shall keep you updated as and when there are any meaningful figures.
