Wintry weather is certainly upon us at the moment with temperatures below freezing in many parts of the UK with some places also having a covering of snow. So, what can you do at this time of year to help look after your car and reduce the possibility of breaking down or being involved in a road traffic accident?
Ideally, your car should have been serviced before the winter weather arrived as this would help reduce the possibility of you breaking down and help keep you safe whilst driving it. The garage would no doubt have made sure that things like your car’s fluid levels are correct and changed when required, that your brakes are in good working order, that none of your tyres need changing and that it is mechanically sound to name but a few things they would look at.
If you have not been able to arrange a full service perhaps due to your personal financial situation then at least have your brakes checked out to make sure that, for instance, the brake pads and drums are OK.
Things like changing the oil and filter, making sure the tyres have sufficient tread and that your wiper blades are OK may be things that you feel able to do yourself. You should also check that you have adequate anti-freeze and windscreen washer fluid in the car.
Make sure that all the lights are working and clean them on a regular basis.
Check that the battery is performing as it should by using a tester or have a professional test it for you.
You may also wish to carry in your car boot things like a shovel, wellington boots, some food, chocolate bars and drink, torch and some warm clothing as well as deicer and an ice scraper in case you either brake down or get caught in deep snow. Also make sure that you have a mobile phone with you and a charger.
