Why Do Insurers Deny Some Motor Insurance Claims?

It should be borne in mind that a large percentage of claims submitted by motorists on their car insurance policies are paid out but there are some that are denied by insurance companies. So, let us have a look at some of the reasons why an insurer turns aside a claim.

Incorrect information provided upon application for cover

Insurance companies take a number of factors into account when deciding how much to charge you for insuring your car such as your age, where you live, what you do for a living, the number of miles you drive each year, your claims experience, the make and model of car and the level of cover.

So, for example, if you incorrectly state what job you do on the application form for car insurance then, should you make a claim, it may be denied by the insurer.

If you state on the application form that you estimate that you will only be driving 5,000 miles per annum but it turns out that you do say 50,000 miles per annum then your claim may be denied.

If you state on the application form that you are 50 years of age when in fact you are actually only 20 years of age then, should you submit a claim as a result of say a road traffic accident, it may be denied.

If you do not tell the insurance company about any road traffic accidents you have had in the period requested then, should you claim on your car insurance policy, it may be denied.

Utilising invalid or out of date documents

If your MOT is out of date and you were to submit a claim on your car insurance policy your claim may be denied.

If your driving license is not valid i.e. if you are involved in a road traffic accident whilst driving your car without being supervised and you only have a provisional driving license your motor insurance claim may be denied.

Modifications to car

If you carry out modifications to your car such as having alloy wheels fitted then you must inform your insurer as such modifications may affect how much you pay in premiums. Failure to do so may result in a claim being denied.

Negligence

If you leave your car keys in the ignition while the vehicle is left unattended say on your drive and it is stolen your claim may be denied.

Roadworthiness of vehicle

If your car is in need of repairs to make it roadworthy and you are involved in a road traffic accident then your insurance claim may be denied.

We trust that the above is of interest.
