As you get older, it can become increasingly difficult to obtain car insurance with fewer providers offering such cover to very elderly people. If you find yourself in this situation then you may be interested to read that there is an agreement in place that may prove of benefit.
Those taking part in the agreement that was originally set up in 2012 are the Government, the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA) and the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
The scheme is obviously proving very popular as the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA) has received in excess of 700,000 enquiries relating to both motor and travel insurance from elderly individuals here in the UK.
If an insurance broker or insurance company is not able to sort out cover for an elderly motorist then, under the terms of the agreement, the broker or insurer will automatically refer the person involved to another provider of motor insurance who should be able to offer cover. Alternatively, a driver can be referred to a signposting service for assistance. The British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA) offers such a service called Find – Insurance.
It is to be hoped that the scheme will enable older motorists to obtain competitively priced motor insurance. After all, if someone is felt to be medically fit to still get behind the wheel of a car then he or she should be able to obtain reasonably priced, good quality car insurance here in the UK.
The above scheme really does sound to be of potential benefit to the older motorist.
