Some interesting research has been carried out by RAC Insurance into the number of drivers who do not inform their car insurer that they have been unfortunate to have got penalty points on their driving licenses. Those points could be given for a range of offences such as exceeding the speed limit or driving a car with badly worn tyres. In fact, the research revealed that 90% of motorists taking part in the survey had been given points as a result of speeding.
The research revealed that 23% of motorists did not let their motor insurance provider know that they had got penalty points on their driving license. Motorists either do not tell their insurer on purpose or forget to do so.
Someone getting points on their license is possibly going to find that the cost of providing their car insurance is going to go up. This is something that motorists could do without but, of course, they should not have broken the law.
A particularly concerning statistic coming out of the research revealed that 10% of motorists knew another motorist who had been given penalty points but claimed that their partner was at the driving wheel of the vehicle. If this illegal act is discovered then the people involved could face a prison sentence for perverting the course of justice as well as other penalties.
When you consider the potential repercussions of getting penalty points surely it would be preferable for motorists to not commit any driving offences such as breaking the speed limit. Should someone get such points then they may well find that there are some car insurance companies that will not consider providing cover but if they do it is quite possible that many will charge more for providing the cover. If you have penalty points on your driving license then you may wish to try to obtain a number of quotes to compare the cost.
